Drow have a severe light sensitivity and tend to congregate in dark places. They are mostly nocturnal while a few range into the crepuscular category. Due to this they are predominately a nomadic culture going to the polar caps where darkness stays for months at a time. Those that prefer to settle in warmer climates go underground.

They are constantly compared to both elves and vampires. What started as "elves of dark places" or "elves of the dark" eventually got shortened to dark elves. The more they were called another race the more prideful in their culture they became and dislike the vampires and elves on principle.

The other races watch them with confused curiosity. Neither understand the friction but do nothing to convince the drow to like them.
